Chapter 24:Transformation

Monday morning I walked into the school with Thomas. The walls seemed to be vibrating with energy. Something was going on, I could feel it.

I glanced at Thomas who was frowning. He could sense it to.

“What the hell is going on?” I asked him.

“I have no idea.” He shrugged.

We walked into our first class and everyone seemed to be staring at us. At me specifically.

“What the fuck? Do I have toilet paper on my shoe or something?” I muttered under my breath.

Thomas snickered, plopping down in the seat behind mine.

I removed my books from my messenger bag and waited for class to begin. The professor had to call the class to order several times.

When the professor dismissed us, I walked to my next class, eager to see Olivia.

She was already sitting in her usual seat.

I sat next to her. “Hey, what’s going on?” I asked her.

She smiled. “Well, I think maybe everyone might know about us.”

“About us?”

“Well, you know… that we’re a couple.” She smiled. “So I can do this…” She reached out and slipped her hand into mine on the desk.

“Oh. Okay… so then I can do… this…” I murmured, leaning closer to her and lightly kissing her lips.

She giggled. “I think the cat is definitely out of the bag.

I glanced around stealthily. I could see several students were looking at us, and several were pretending not to look.

The professor came into the room, wheeling an expensive television set. I dropped our hands off the lab table; I kept her hand still tightly in mine. The professor didn’t make any attempt to call the class to order. It was still early and students were still filtering through the door.

She smiled at me, sliding her stool carefully closer to mine.

“Do you want to do something tonight?” I asked her gently.

She nodded. “Definitely. What have you got in mind?”

“Well, Friday night you told me you’d never really played pool before. Maybe I can show you in the common room…” I suggested.

“Okay.” She smiled. “I think I’d love that.”

“Me too.” I grinned.

“Are you excited about the dance yet?” I asked.

“I’m very excited. Gabby is going to do my hair and make up…”

I must have looked worried because Olivia laughed. “Don’t worry. I’ll make sure that she doesn’t make me look like a cheap hooker.”

“Well, you’d still be the hottest hooker I’ve ever met.” I smirked.

Olivia laughed.

“Do you think maybe we could skip our afternoon classes?” I asked her. “I’m sure we could find something better to do.”

Olivia laughed softly. “We have history homework to turn in.”

“Right.” I nodded.

The professor called the class to order and before long the lights were switched off and the video was continuing.

Olivia leaned over her notebook, resuming the doodles in the margins of the paper. I watched her more than I watched the video. I watched her moisten her lips as she concentrated, and occasionally twirled a lock of hair around her finger.

I leaned forward on my desk, resting my head on my fist.

As soon as the class ended I stood and shoved my books into my messenger bag. “So are you eating with Gabby today, or are you free?” I asked, slinging my bag over my shoulder.

Olivia smiled. “I think I could definitely eat with you today.”

“Okay, great. Do you want to eat in the cafeteria or find someplace else?” I asked, lightly moving my arm around her.

“The cafeteria if you don’t mind.” She smiled. “I have to buy my lunch today.”

“Me too.” I nodded.

“Okay. Is Thomas going to be there too?”

“He’s working on something for his advanced calculus class… It’s going to be just us.”

“Oh, okay.” She sounded slightly eager.

Once we reached the hallway, I moved my arm from around her and touched her arm. I slid my fingers lightly down until I reached her hand and interlaced my fingers with hers.

She smiled up at me. “So you’re really going to teach me to play pool? Do you think I’ll ever be as good as you?”

I laughed. “I bet you will. I mean, you’re good at everything, right?”

Olivia laughed. “I am definitely not good at everything!”

“Yes you are!” I pointed out. “You’re an excellent cook, a great artist… you’re smart… I think you’re good at everything.” I shrugged.

Olivia blushed. “There are plenty of things I’m terrible at.”

“Name one.” I challenged.

She chewed her lip, “Well, I can think of one thing I can be really bad at… something I’ve never done before…” She began slowly.

“What’s that?” I prompted.

She clamped her lips shut. “I… I can’t tell you… but you’ll… you’ll find out.”

I frowned, we had reached the cafeteria and I could already tell she was desperate to leave the conversation behind us.

We moved into the line for food and I reached for two trays, releasing Olivia’s hand.

Olivia was staring up at the menu. She gasped. “Ooh! They have fettuccini alfredo! That’s my favourite!”

I smiled. “Is that what you’re getting?”

She nodded. “It’s actually really good here.”

“Okay, I’ll get that too.” I agreed. “If it’s so highly recommended…”

Olivia laughed softly.

Olivia gave her order to the woman behind the sneeze guard and I followed suit.

We each grabbed a can of soda and I reached for a bag of chips.

We paid for our meals and I carried both our trays to a table at the back of the cafeteria.

Olivia slid into a seat and I placed her tray in front of her before sitting next to her.

“So, does Thomas have a date to the Founders Formal?” Olivia asked curiously.

I sighed. “No. I swear that guy is like a hermit. I even offered to set him up or help him find a date, and he refuses. And I know the guy has a tux hidden in the back of his closet…”

“Oh…” Olivia mused. “I was going to offer to find him someone to go with… but if he’s adamant about not going…”

“Well, to be honest, I think he may have a little thing for your friend Gabby.” I mused.

Olivia grinned. “Really? Seriously?”

I nodded. “He checks her out all the time. I mean, he also goes on about how conceited she is, but he’s always looking at her.”

Olivia laughed softly. “Well… she’s got a date for the Founders Formal. He’s a total jerk, but maybe the next dance… we’ll have to set something up.”

“I hope the guy knows he’s in way over his head.” I mused.

Olivia laughed. “Oh, come on. We’re not that bad!”

“Oh, yeah. You girls are all kinds of trouble.” I teased.

She playfully pushed my arm. “I think you’re the one who’s trouble mister. You’re a bad influence, teaching me to hustle pool.”

I laughed, shaking my head. She had absolutely no idea the effect she had on me. She had no idea what trouble she could get me into no matter how sweet and innocent she was.

Even a couple of weeks into the relationship and I would jump through hoops just for one single kiss from her.
